Does a Better Guitar improve your playing?

Well earlier i was looking into getting a Les Paul but realized i love SG models tons more and I've been trying to convince my dad into getting one(Gibson SG standard) for my birthday since its pretty expensive. So i was wondering if its true if a better guitar will improve your playing? by the way i currently own a Epiphone SG special and the electronics stopped working right for like the third time and doesn't go full volume -.-
